"This is a painting of my grandma who was born Elizabeth Jones, in Llanelli in 1917. Everybody called her Lily. In the painting she is holding my Mum as a baby.
She had a difficult life, spending some time in an orphanage after her mother died, aged 26, and her father had to go to London to get work.
She left school at 15 and went to work at Woolworths, meeting and marrying my Granddad when she was 18. I can only imagine how difficult it was bringing up three children during the war years.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer on her 49th birthday. She died on Mother’s Day three years later, aged 52.
I don’t remember my grandma, but my Mum says that despite all that she had been through she was the kindest, sweetest, funniest person you could have ever wished to meet, everyone loved her. My Mum has never stopped missing her."
